We’re proud to reveal that the Rockafellas’ Tournament of Light for under 16s in South Africa was a thrilling success.
Rockafellas Football Club is one of the community initiatives we’re long term supporters of through our Nancy Tweddle Foundation, and the tournament is an annual sporting highlight.
The club’s motto is “We set the lead, others shall follow – don’t quit”, and is also described as “The pride of Mitchell’s Plains, Cape Town”, where it is based.
Well, the Under 16s Rockafellas team certainly made us very proud to be their sponsors when they took to the field and played their way into the final, showing off the skills they have honed through hard work and determination.
Alas, they were just pipped at the post for pole position – losing 2-1 to Fish Hoek FC.
A “very close” and “strong” game
But our South Africa office manager, Riaan Oosthuizen, revealed it was a thrilling and “very close” game, which marked the culmination of days of matches played between different clubs.
Players delivered a “strong” game
Riaan said: “The game kicked off with a bang when our team Rockafellas scored in the opening minute, but unfortunately, the boys from Fish Hoek grew in confidence and closed out the match out with two goals at the end of the first half.
“Our boys came back very strong in the second half, but just could not get the equalizer.”
Members of Burton Rugby Club, who are currently taking part in a rugby exchange with South Africa Rugby Union, which we’re also honoured to sponsor, were also at the final to wish the young players good luck and to cheer them on.
As well as sponsoring the club’s kit, we also sponsor events, like the Tournament of Light, wherever we can.
Very proud moment
Riaan added: “As always, we were all very proud to be associated with Rockafellas FC and Jupiter.”
“And, as usual, it was a wonderfully organised event, that was presented in a very professional way, and it was well supported by locals.
“Everyone from the club wished Jupiter well and thanked us sincerely for the sponsorship that we give it every year, and, during the match, club chairman, Patrick, whispered in my ear; ‘Thank you Jupiter, without your sponsorship this tournament would not be possible’.”
Derek Muller, a spokesman for Fish Hoek AFC, said: “Our boys were delighted to win the trophy and the tournament has created lasting memories for these young ‘men’ that they will carry forever.”
Helping those at risk from criminal gangs and drugs
Rockafellas Sports Club, affiliated to “Mitchells Plain Local Football Association” – the South African Football Association” – (SAFA) is made up of 7 youth divisions (U/8 to U/19) & 3 senior divisions with 20 players in each division.
Rocklands and Mitchells Plain are well known for drug related crime and considered one of the most underprivileged areas of the Cape Flats with criminal gangs and drugs prolific.
The club’s objective is to use the involvement in football and being part of a club, which is volunteer-run, to help children and young people to distance themselves from criminal activity.
