A firm favourite in fruit bowls, drinks, and recipes the world over, pineapple is also recognized as containing one of the highest amounts of vitamin C among all types of fruit.
A bona fide superfruit, pineapple also contains an impressive amount of calcium, magnesium, iron and potassium as well as developing bromelain, an enzyme that can help decrease swelling and pain.
The MD2 variety
The MD2 hybrid was developed in the 1980’s in direct response to the growing calls for a sweeter pineapple more suited to being eaten fresh, rather than canned for the long journey to key markets.
MD2 pineapples are one of the world’s sweetest varieties and naturally contain around four times the amount of vitamin C when compared to the other cultivars. Easily identified by its bright gold skin, MD2 pineapples are also prized for their uniformity and consistency of size.
How do pineapples grow?
Contrary to the growing habits of other pineapple varieties, MD2’s when planted do not require an irrigation system, instead they can flourish solely on a natural water source and rainfall in their chosen growing region.
Regular pineapple varieties are often grown on slopes between 2-6% as good drainage leads to a stronger root system. However, MD2 pineapples can be planted on flat ground which makes it a more desirable option for farmers with limited acreage.
Did you know…?
MD2 pineapples are also naturally immune to many diseases and viruses which means they are a relatively low maintenance fruit when compared to other cultivars.
